Transport of goods and mobility in businesses

This category includes activities related to the movement of goods and people.

The actions presented here are both for businesses with operations in the handling, transport, logistics and the movement of goods and people, and for businesses that want to implement of sustainable mobility solutions for their employees.

Action 1

Implement sustainable travel solutions for employees

There are a number of options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated by employee travel, for example, implementing a ride sharing system in the business or using car sharing or ride sharing services designed for businesses.

Sample case

Université Laval

To encourage its students to choose sustainable transportation, Université Laval developed a travel management plan with the consulting firm Mobili-T. Students and faculty benefited from secured pedestrian paths, a free ridesharing platform, a guaranteed ride home program, discounts on public transit and secure bike shelters and garages.

Action 2

Optimize a vehicle fleet by reducing its size and prioritizing electrification

By 2035, every new vehicle sold in Canada will have to be electric. Start the transition to electric vehicles to meet the 2035 deadline for new vehicles sales in Canada.

Sample case

Simard Transport

The Quebec transport company Simard Transport worked with Cléo, a Hydro-Québec subsidiary, and GLOBOCAM, the largest heavy truck dealer in Quebec, to start its energy transition and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Simard Transport optimized its fleet of trucks by adding four eCascadia trucks equipped with a 438 kW/h battery and power equivalent to a 470 hp motor, in addition to installing four charging stations at the work site.

Action 3

Improve et mutualize freight transport logistics and sustainable delivery

Sustainable delivery can refer to using electric vehicles or delivery bikes for shorter distances. Sustainable freight transport logistics offers many advantages, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reduced traffic and circulation of goods trucks, and less noise and noise pollution.

Sample case

Colibri, Ville de Montréal

To make its urban logistics more environmentally responsible, the Ville de Montréal implemented the Colibri mini-hub project, offering more efficient decarbonized deliveries in densely populated neighbourhoods. Rather than using a fleet of trucks to deliver every package directly to the door, a single truck dispatches many packages to a neighbourhood mini distribution centre. The last part of the trip is made by cargo bikes or small electric vehicles suitable for urban settings. The Ville de Montréal noted a reduction in traffic, congestion and noise pollution, fewer accidents and less wear on roads in neighbourhoods where the Colibri project was implemented.

Action 4

Extend the life cycle of vehicles by fostering reuse through donations and sales

By encouraging reuse through donations and sales, businesses reduce waste and maximize the use of resources already invested in manufacturing. For over 50 years, the Association of Auto Parts Recyclers (ARPAC) has offered initiatives and programs for buying, recycling or reusing used vehicles and their parts, properly disposing of them and minimizing the environmental impact. Other businesses, such as Recyc-Auto and Écopièces, offer similar services in Quebec.

Sample case

Auto pour l’environnement, ARPAC

Created by the Association of Auto Parts Recyclers (ARPAC), the goal of the Auto pour l’environnement program is to support environmental organizations. Once a vehicle is recovered by the ARPAC, 100% of the estimated monetary value of the vehicle is given to one of 13 partner organizations, including Équiterre, PurNat and Recyclo-Centre, to encourage them in their mission, advance their research projects, finance their operations and reduce the environmental impact of mechanical waste.
